James Rennell Centre for Ocean Circulation INTERNAL DOCUMENT No. 3 Wind stress and its dependence on wind speed and sea state
نویسنده
چکیده
The aim of the project is to detect and quantify the egect of sea state on the wind stress. An overview of the basic theory of wind stress in the surface layer is provided, along with a more detailed description of the inertial dissipation method which is used to obtain stress estimates for this study. Wind stress measurements by other researchers illustrate the large scatter which seems to be inherent in the drag coefBcient/wind speed relationship, and parameterisations of the wave Seld have been suggested to explain at least some of this scatter, Past appraisals of the dissipation technique show it to be capable of measuring wind stress over the oceans. Details are given of the data collection and processing to date. The analysis of the data has so far resulted in an lOS report on the performance of a prototype sonic anemometer, and a paper presenting preliminary results at the 1991 lUGG. Drag coefGcients from an early data set are higher than expected and possible reasons for this are discussed. The next stages of data analysis are discussed, and ways of achieving our overall aim of detecting the eSect of sea state on wind stress are described.

3D Modeling of Wind-Driven Circulation In The Northern Indian Ocean During Monsoon
Abstract The purpose of this research is to design and identify some of the natures and characteristics of high-resolution surface currents in the Northern Indian Ocean. The pattern of 3D circulation of the Wind-driven surface currents, Sea surface temperature (SST) and Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) distribution in the Northern Indian Ocean using The MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) with ho...
متن کاملA Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate
In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...
متن کاملبررسی تغییرات سرعت باد در نزدیکی منطقه چابهار در دریای عمان در اثر تغییر اقلیم
Climate change caused the changes in earth surface temperature, precipitation, sea surface level, wind speeds, wave heights, coastlines, etc. Estimation of the effect of climate change is of great importance in long-term studies of such parameters. In this study, the effect of climate change on average wind speed near Chabahar, Gulf of Oman is assessed until the year 2100. For this purpose, win...
متن کاملInvestigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...
متن کاملWind Wave Effects On Surface Stress In Hydrodynamic Modeling
Wind, wave and current interactions control the boundary fluxes, momentum and energy exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean, and within the water column. The wind wave effect on surface stress is investigated using a three-dimensional time-dependant ocean circulation model. The POM (Princeton Ocean Model) based model is implemented with realistic coastlines in South China Sea and emphasi...
